View Full Version : How 'gay'.

I just recently started noticing how much people refer to something as being "gay" instead of stupid or any other word.
When I bring it up around other people they always say "I didn't mean that towards you, I meant the bad gay" or "I didn't mean that towards you, I meant the stupid gay, you know?"
It's starting to drive me insane, because I'm starting to find it insulting.
What do you guys think about this, I'm just curious to know.

I think its really stupid . . .
And offending on alot of levels.
Gay is still a sore subject with alot of people and then turning it into an insult or ...slang is like ...'wth are you thinking?!'
I think that it should have started alot of controversy when it started but it didnt and because nobody was like
'thats dumb to say ..'
its now just kinda there and growing...

i think its really ... stupid! But before it gay refered to as Homosexualty it meant like happy or something and it was used like that.... but now its used like its a part of everyday vocab like it's nothing! But you are right it is insulting... But hey i guess they dont know any better! But like I said Your Right! It would be really insulting!!!

Some statistics
83% of teachers asked in a recent survey said they heard the word 'gay' being used regularly as an insult. The term 'gay' is the most frequently used insult in British schools.
Its clearly a problem, I do find it kind of offensive, but I'm used to it now I guess. Which is a bad thing definately.
I must admit that I use to use it as a term against something stupid or something that I didn't feelw as right. I would never use it as an insult because i know how much it can hurt sometimes.
If I had a pound for everytime my sexuality came up in a conversation...
i would be loaded =]

Well its none of their business to be fair!
My point exactley.
It's as if their own lives are really that deprived of any action that they have to try seek it on my behalf?

Hmm being honest I kinda use that all the time.
:|
I can't help it cos i heard it all the time since i was younger
and it's just become apart of my vocab.
Everyone in my school does it aswell.
Whenever i say it now i feel bad though cos i know how
other people feel.

I reckon it's pretty insulting. No one uses the word gay for happy anymore, so why must they use it to mean bad or stupid? I don't use it at all.

Oh gosh it's awful. Yeah, I hear it every day at my school. I really don't like it, but there's not much anyone can do because you'll find it in basically any and every british school.
I used to graffiti a desk or something every time I heard it, just to sort of 'even it out'.
But to be honest I've recently come across a lot of gay people who use it the same way.. at first I was like 'whats that about?' but I spose thats the best thing to do, not let it get to you =/

I never use it as an offence to someone, because two of my closest friends are gay, and i love them both.
I only use it and very rarely use it in the context of like 'eurghthis homework is so gay!', but i can understand how easily it can offend someone.

Gay used in a negative way increases the likelihood that gay has a negative connotation.
I remember when I was a really small kid and the word everyone avoided using was..."gay". The word was whispered and if you said it out loud, "Haha! You're GAY! The biggest flaming gay kid in the GayUNIVERSE!!!"
Little kids who didn't understand the meaning, like me, would go, "OH NO! I can't be gay, I'm not gay! NO WAY!!!"
the word was a bargaining chip. If we were still kids, you'd do well to avoid the word, because gay would put you out of the social circle, haha.
Fastforward 10 years.
The same kids using the "word" when they were younger are now bigger, adult versions of themselves.
They use "gay" the same way they used it before; only this time, with a little (I mean very little) finesse.
"Ugh! Gah! I hate this! Why do I have to run 5 miles!!! THIS...IS SO...GAAAY!!! >:O"
The offensive part of all of this is that few will stop to teach CHILDREN that it isn't ok to say that word out of its context.
A Good Example of How to Teach the Main Users of the Gay word:
Teacher:"Ok Max, that word is really offensive when you use it. Why don't you say something different from now on when you get angry, alright? :)"
Max: Alright teach.
2 days later...
*Max gets a new homework assignment*
Max: This is so George W. Bush has a ninja abortion! >:(
Teacher: Much better Max...err, well, better than before.
Well, we can't all be great at trash-talking.
Leave it to your mama I guess. :)
For the future, I think we should all teach the younger guys and girls about this issue.
Later! ^_^
I really don't agree with using a label of sexuality as an insult; it's obviously attaching this negative stigma attached to gay people and thus, promoting homophobia.
I think it needs to stop. If you use 'gay' to describe something negative, simply don't do it.

You know, when I first came out to my friends, I really hated how they used 'gay' as a derogatory remark. But now that I am very very comfortable with my sexuality, it doesn't bother me at all. In fact, I use it also.
I don't think this is something we can change in this generation, we should probably aim at changing it with the kids, teaching them that it is bad and that they shouldn't use it in a bad way.

gay is not a synonym for shitty. simple as that. if people say that something is dumb or crap, they need to say it. not "gay". if gay isn't meant as an insult, then why do they use it to insult people/things? it's ridiculous.

that's like being an alcoholic or a smoker and telling your kids not to be an alcoholic or smoke. it's hypocritical and it doesn't set a good example. monkey see, monkey do.

Some people are gay. Get over it.
Good poster and sticker campaign. Not sure if anyone else will have seen it.
Don't know what impact its going to have though.
