We had this discussion in French class today.

Right before the silence.

What do you think of the 1/2 minute silence?
Do you think that it's reasonable that we ask you to give up a few moments of your existance to think about the hundreds of thousands of brave soldiers that died fighting for your freedom?
do you think that's fair?
would you begrudge those people 3 or 4 minutes of your life a year?

Do you think it's respectful?

Do you think it's trivial, and unnecessary?

I want to know your views on this people.
There is some respect to be had in speaking up about how you feel on this.
Particularly with how menacing i'm pretty sure i come across in this post.

GO GO GO.

I think a few minutes is BULL.

They DESERVE MORE!!

(an hour?)

God bless them and how they served our country!!

=] I LOVE YOU BOYS.

Yes, they deserve more.
I dont think it's about the length of time though.

i think the problem with the silence is that people just let their minds wander.
noone really THINKS about what the silence is for :(

What we need to do is find something that we can use towards celebrating Rememberance Day.

It has to be something snazzy that everyone will enjoy yet keep on hand at the subject BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY it must be respectful towards those who sacrificed themselves to make this country what it is!!

yeah but, most people now dont think about the poppies when they get them.
its just like, "oh, charity badges, here's a quid"

it's almost automatic.

or your parents will go to you "are they selling poppies in your school? get me three?"

They gave up their lives for the new generation

They should be respected

If I could I would give up my life just so they could live theirs

Poppies are actually more special,

If you have heard of Flanders Fields

For those who don't I will explain

A doctor who was in the war watching everyone die and wounded was looking across no man's land

And where the ground had been turned and ruined grew poppies.

Making him write the poem "Flanders Fields"

I always keep my poppies forever, my family fought so I will respect it =]

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep,
though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

I have no idea what you're talking about, but this reminds me of something we do here in Texas: our state passed a bill that says that in every school, there must be a moment of silence (like, a minute or so) to respect the soldiers and whatnot.

Now, while I agree that the soldiers should be respected, I do NOT think it's okay to pass a bill forcing people to do what should be a choice. So everyday, when I was in school, during our morning announcements, there would be a moment of silence. SOME kids would pray, but most just turned around and started talking to their friends or texting. I just drew, or listened to music. You would occasionally get the subsitute teacher who threatened to send you to the office for not obeying the law, but most teachers just didn't care.

Now, what do you think of THAT? FORCED to show respect, instead of doing it out of the kindness of your heart? And I never said the pledge to our flag. And I never prayed in school. I'm a rebel:]

"I pledge alliegance to the flag of the United States of America.
And to the Republic, for which it stands:
One Nation, Under God, Indivisible, for Liberty and Justice for All"

"Honour The Texas Flag, I pledge alliegance to thee:
Texas, One, and indivisible"

Our state has it's own little pledge, because it is the only state of the 50 that has been it's own country. Yes, Texas once broke away from the US and was it's own country for a few years.

I don't pledge alliegance to anything I don't choose.
I've got my free will
