As we all know 14th Febuary is coming up and what does that mean? Yes, you've guessed it! It's Valentines Day. Which springs up our next debate:
Is Valentines Day really the day when one can express his/her love for the other? Do we really need a day to express our love? Is it just another national holiday aimed to scam millions out of spending? What do you think?
(L)
P.S. If you feel there is a topic you'd like us all to discuss feel free to send a message.
In my opinion, I think that Valentines is a bit of a waste really... people in relationships should be romantic everyyyyy day. However, maybe for some people that don't normally have the time to... you know... maybe Valentines is a good excuse for them to do just that? :P

The whole valentines day thing freaks me out.
Did you know that it's actually the day of this widespread massacre?
It's supposed to be romantic because one of the people who died there left his wife a note saying "love, your valentine"
seriously... that's IT.
DOUBLE YA TEE EFF?

I read somewhere that Valentines Day is actually supposed to be celebrated on the 15th rather than the 14th due to some ceremoney to do with it being on the 15th, i can't remember the details but there are many theories on the beginnings of Valentines Day.
Anywho i don't think we need a day to lavish our loved ones with our undivided attention. I also do not think highly of being forced to buy gifts for our loved ones, gifts are so much sweeter when given voluntary (Well not forced per say but you feel like a bad boyfriend/girlfriend if you don't).

I think it's kind of amusing when people go on about how much they hate valentines day and how overrated it is, and then are gutted when their bf/gf doesn't go out of the way to do something special for valentines

I only like Valentines day for the candy. My mom only lets me eat candy on "holidays" b/c she says I become really hyper if I have too much candy. lol
Anyways, last year I was sitting in class while they were calling out names for people who had received gifts from others through the school, I get called out & got a teddy bear with a balloon & a Hershey's chocolate bar. It was from a guy I sat by in one of my classes. Sadly he moved schools before the next year and didn't even tell me he liked me in person.
There's just something about Valentines Day that makes me cringe, but I put up with it for the candeh. :eat:

i think that its just another glorified holiday where people are guilted into buying things for love ones that really dont need.
also if you want to get cross-cultural then in japn valentines day is feb 14th and its a day that girls give chocolate and sweets and then march 14th is white day and its a day when guys give girls something white
so i say we go do with the japanese on this subject

I don't know if you're replying directly to my message but anywho.
I don't hate it and i wouldn't care if a guy got me something or not, that's just greedy. I just think that it wouldn't matter if it didn't exist.

^ loves benny's candy-reseponse^
I've never had a good Valentines Day, so hopefully this year it'll change. Any time I've tried to do something "in the spirit", it's horribly backfired on me, or flat-out not worked.
1. one time, I had my friend take a box of imported chocolates to the guy I was crushing on. He asked who they were from, and she told him it was from me. He gasped, dropped them, stepped on them, and threw them away: all in a matter of about 6 seconds. That one really hurt me deep for a while.
2. a few years later, I picked out a bunch of specific Hershey's kisses and hand-delivered them to the guy I was crushing on. Each of the little wrappers said something different, hence specific. He took them and ate them, but only for the free candy: he actually liked my best friend who was talking to him FOR me. ugh.
*((though, that one did show me guys are not all complete jerks: one of my guy friends said if a girl did that for him, he'd be completely flattered and love it))*
It is what it is, and it's not going away. I've learned not to expect anything from it, but if someone does get me something, I'll of course be grateful. Then again, I'm pretty grateful when I receive ALL gifts, so...
meh.

Yea, my mom's not a very fun person, & doesn't like it when I get hyper.
How do I live?
Usually, like everything else, I sneak behind my moms back & get candy. ;)

My view on Valentines Day is simple...It's another day on the calendar.
But..I do have to say that if I get things for valentines day for from a person in a relationship, I do get a bit ticked.
You shouldn't need greedy corporate scum bags let you know when to tell me you like/love me.
I know..stupid..but I'm a firm believer that things that happen with other people on this day..should happen all the time..not on just Feb. 14th.
Eff that.
Eff that hard.

Hm.
I personally don't see the point in Valentines Day, mostly because I never have a Valentine. ):
Well yeah.
Besides that, it is just another day that some guy came up with as an excuse to get people to buy stuff from him saying "You need to buy this for your loved one if you want to liveee!!!"

i think that these day Valentines,is ..well awful
its supposed to be about a love between TWO people
not a valentine for your friend, your mom,and your grandma, and whomever else you can think of
But there was a story behind Valentines day which always amazed me
St Valentine a priest was in love with a girl
and he used to sent her secret valentines
i really dont remember the whole story, its sort of like romeo and juliet because he died on Feb 14.

Just something I know about Valentines Day
But like Alex said
It's actually not to do with the whole love thing
It's to celebrate the death Of Saint Valentine (oh yes i listen in school)
Basically men refused to go to war because they had lovers/wives etc at home.
So a law got passed out banning all engagments and marriages so men were forced to go to war.
Then this guy Saint Valentine didn't like it.
So he secretly married people because he was nice like that =]
But then he got imprisioned and later died in prison.
And when he was in prison sent letters to his lover, thus creating the first ever valentines card.
Because he was so nice to people they then made the holiday "valentines day"
Celebrating what he had done for the people =]
I like this poem aswell (i'm studying it in school atm)
And it really does open the real meaning of Valentines Day
The poem is called Valentine by Carol Ann Duffy
Not a red rose or a satin heart.
I give you an onion.
It is a moon wrapped in brown paper.
It promises light
like the careful undressing of love.
Here.
It will blind you with tears
like a lover.
It will make your reflection
a wobbling photo of grief.
I am trying to be truthful.
Not a cute card or a kissogram.
I give you an onion.
Its fierce kiss will stay on your lips,
possessive and faithful
as we are,
for as long as we are.
Take it.
Its platinum loops shrink to a wedding-ring,
if you like.
Lethal.
Its scent will cling to your fingers,
cling to your knife.
Sorry i'm blabbing too much now loll
Anywhoo to put it simply...it's abit of a money scam.
Love should be about liking someone, not for what they get you.

I don't really believe that's how Valentines Day came to be.
Reason being; there are one too many theories on how it came to be and i don't choose to believe any of them.
I'll just assume some nerdy little fellow from the good old days just made it up so he/she could send 'gifts' to his/her stalkee.
