I was reading Jaymee-Marie's pregnancy update, and i just thought i would post a topic on it.
Here are my questions.
I suggest you read and think about them all before you answer the last one.
9 out of 10 babies who are found to have downs' syndrome prenatally are aborted. Is this okay? Would you abort your baby if it had downs' syndrome? Why do you think people do this? Is the idea of aborting a baby with downs' syndrome "because it wouldnt be fair on the baby to let it live" okay? or is it deluded?
If your baby had downs' syndrome, would you love it any less?
Is it okay for doctors to recommend the abortion of such babies? Should people who keep these babies be looked down upon and considered bad people?
Is the prenatal downs' syndrome testing developing into a form of neo-naziism? Will it get worse? Will people continue to abort their babies because theyre not "perfect".
A doctor told my auntie to abort my cousin because he was going to be born with a cleft palate... is this too far?
Where do we draw the line?
Are we playing God?
Recently, a friend of my sisters aborted her baby [this part of the question is not up for discussion. no judgements please]. She hadn't known that she was pregnant and went on a holiday where she consumed copious amounts of alcohol. Upon returning, she went for a check-up and found out that she WAS pregnant. The doctor told her that because of her drinking the baby was "defective". Discuss the use of the word "defective" when describing a child, by a member of the medical profession.
The prenatal downs' syndrome testing can be fatal anyway, the testing however, does not discriminate. How would you feel if you decided to go ahead with this testing and lost a perfectly healthy baby because you took a test "just in case" it was disabled. Could this loss of a healthy baby be considered "karma" for those people who took the test knowing that they would abort the child if it was a downs' syndrome baby?
and, my final question...
Is the prenatal downs' syndrome testing moral? Do you think it is a good thing, or should it be abolished? Give reasons.
I'm curious to see the answers I get for this one.
