View Full Version : Gay Gene??

I was having a conversation about this with a couple of my mates who told me that scientist have now discovered a "gay gene" I was wondering if this was true, because i don't believe it and what does everyone think about it?
You are who you are. Theres not just a gene that has been placed into your body?!
How can a gene make you gay?

Utter rubbish.
A gay gene? Come on, your sexuality isn't something decided by genetics.
It's just another way for homophobes to label homosexuality as a disease, or a fault.
And what about all these gay people with straight parents and grandparents?
It's silly to even think of something like that imo.
I wouldn't completely dismiss the idea.. though saying it CAUSES homosexuality is pushing the boundries.
Maybe its a predisposition, not a causation...
Maybe it's an april fools ;_;
Nah, I don't believe in that.
I think sexuality is a mental state. It's controled by the levels of hormones in your body.
If you have more oestrogen, you're attracted to males, if you have more testosterone, quite the opposite; you're attracted to females.
Nothing's proven though but that's what I think

THATS what I mean about a predisposition ;D
Arn't genes passed through parents though?
Yeah but it could be recessive... like, your parents both might carry it but not display it's effects.
Like eye colour. :)

Yes.
That's why im saying if you have straight parents AND straight grandparents you couldnt possibly get the gene.

*pokes nina towards my post about recessiveness*

I don't believe in the whole "gene" thing either but some of my mates say that "science" has proven that their is one. But i haven't heard this anywere else.
It wasn't an april's fool, i was told this ages ago. LoL

Yeah but if it's a recessive gene right, and you have four straight grandparents, all four of them could have one of...
oh wait, no it'd have to be furhter back than that...
hold on ;]
If it's a recessive gene both parents would need one each...
So one of each of their parents would need at least one..
but yeah my point is you'd need to have at least one gay person somewhere relatively close in the family generation wise ;]
It gets confusing =l
I can remember reading something about it and thinking that no one was gay in my family and if it was a gene, wouldn't someone in my family be gay?!
x
that gene stuff is all rubbish. my friends said that Mt Due soda kills sperm cells. its all a load of rubbish.
Yeh I heard that, I don't know if it's actually true or not.

THAT explanation makes more sense than the rest thus far. We may never know what makes a person Homosexual for certain, but this makes sense, at least to me.

I do not believe this one bit.
there are no gays on my side of the family.
Not a single one, in fact, I've been pretty much disowned for the fact that I like guys.
This "Gay Gene" is just stupid.
Besides, how are you supposed to inherit it?
Gays can't have sex and produce babies :D
AleksandraStar
04-03-2008, 03:08 AM
that is just stupid,Genes do not make you gay
wow i dont believe that at all
I don't think that it's completely stupid... My belief is that it's a combination of nature & nurture. This maybe and probably isn't right, but that's what I think. And Sys, the point of a recessive gene is so that it's not likely to be passed on to become a phenotype (physical representation) so if this 'gay gene' exists, when a person is gay, they won't pass on the gene to offspring.
I'm still going to have kiddies though :]

I've heard alot about the gay gene thing. I don't believe it, but then again we know virtually nothing about the human genome so maybe there is one that we haven't found anything about yet.
I'd have absolutely no problem with it being a gene, or the absence of one. What difference does it make? Is there a gene that makes a person black? Wouldn't make a difference to me, they're still black and I still have no issue with them so yeah.
Personally I thought homosexuality (love that word) was a chemical imbalance in the brain. Which I think is pretty cool! Go me and my mental disability that makes me have sex with men.

I dont see why it couldnt be in genes,
like the chromosomes or what not which give people ginger hair can skip generations..
It's not impossible for a 'gay' chromosome or whatever to skip generations.
I dont know if there is the 'gay gene' but I dont think it's impossible

That's actually a good theory, its good to see what you all think. I don't believe that there is one, but it could still be possible.

Ahh. I didn't read that one, but basically what I said. Chemical imbalance in the brain and all that jazz. Fun times.
At the end of the day, you are who you are.
There is no one gay in ma family apart from me. Also ma friend and his brother are both gay, so it can happen in families.

Why would everyone dismiss this as ridiculous? It seems feasible. How would this theory "provide straight people with more ammo"? It's highly likely that being gay is a deformity, part of a gene mutation passed on through generations. But that doesn't mean it's a bad thing.
Its such a shadey topic, I don't think it's even possible to give an answer to it without a "what if..."
You're always going to get scientists saying their right.. then you'll get homosexual people saying yeah, they cant help it but you'll also get some saying it was a choice...
If its not a consistant thing it can't be a fully developed theory. There will never be a full concordance rate.

I wouldn't say it's a deformity, a deformity tends to be an abnormally formed part of the body. Homosexuality is an attraction, emotions, sexual desire towards the same sex, nothing to do with looks there lol!!!
I wouldn't think of it as a mutation at all.
Do i look mutated? I certainly hope not lol!!!! xDDD

Mutation has nothing to do with physical appearance. We're all mutants really. We evolved from apes due to gradual gene mutations throughout generations. The thing I was trying to get at was, being gay could be a mutation in genes, something happened which isn't supposed to happen, as we're supposed to be attracted to the opposite sex in order to reproduce. But that's not to suggest it's a bad thing.

But yea i think of mutation as physical...although i shouldn't for all the episodes of x-men i used to watch!! LOL!! I'm not going to go further into this Arguement :D

If there is a gay gene then absolutly every one of has it, I say that because any human able to fall in love is able to fall in love with someone be that male, female, androgen, transexual, intersexual and the wealth of people that are out there in the world.
Unless you are very narrow minded you tastes can be many and varid and change in time just because I like people with dark hair doesnt mean I can honestly say there isnt a blonde out there that I could love too... and to think that just makes your world so much smaller.

I don't believe in the whole "gene" thing either but some of my mates say that "science" has proven that their is one. But i haven't heard this anywere else.
A single gene inserted into mice makes them display homosexual behavior. Homosexual behavior has also been observed in sheep and other species.
So, a gay gene is a possibility.
If there was no gay gene, that would mean people would be able to choose who they were attracted to, or change who they were attracted to over the course over their life. That doesn't make sense to me, because I don't really know that many people who suddenly decide one day "I want to be gay!" or "I want to be straight!"
This post is getting a little long (lol) but I don't think that a "gay gene" is a bad thing, I mean, it's just like your hair or your skin color. There's nothing wrong with it and it can't change.

I was thinking about this. I don't think it's a gene as such because I think it would be too specific. I had an amateur vague unnofficial theory about how people aren't always be born as the 'ideal' human. I do think that it's something to do with chromosones and genes etc, but it's like, are these chromosomes going to form that human every time? [I don't just refer to sexuality here of course..]
I was thinking something when we're formed will control how we turn out. And however much 'femininity' or 'masculinity' is applied to us, can't be the same each boy and girl. Femininity can't be exclusively for girls and vice versa. Like for example some of the time girls who are gay will have other masculine features. [This probably does refer to oestrogen and testosterone or something]
And what about bisexual, asexual and pansexual people etc - I would doubt that there is a gene for each.
But to be honest, I don't think it matters as long as people understand it isn't a choice.
Sorry if I rambled a bit there, it was kind of hard to get into words.

Really?? i've heard of animals being gay. but a "gene" being inserted in mice that make them display homosexual behaviour..not heard of that one.
"The gay gene"-i didn't think there was really such a thing, but reading some of the replies gets me thinking

I don't think there is a gay gene.. because... identical twins have identical genes right...?
So why is it that one twin may be gay while the other is straight? Doesn't make much sense.
Although, there is another theory, its pretty knew also, I'll try my best to explain it...
The human race is very knowledgeable about itself subconsciously and knows what the problems are. The human race as a whole is making more children born gay so that they cant reproduce babies. Kinda like a built-in defense mechanism that we are not aware of.
Very strange theory, but I like it haha.

Ahaha, I only just noticed this xD
ROFL!!!
Also, itsmatt - you can't insert genes into people :S
They get decided before you're born.
And also, DitchtheSavouryAndDeliciousBakedGoods [LOL that came out longer than intended] who says it isn't meant to happen? Gene mutation is a part of evolution which helps us adapt to our environment.
It's like the way they're saying in a few hundred years females will be able to reproduce asexually.
Maybe men will be able to have babies soon and we'll separate into two entirely different species - who knows?
